The Life & Teachings of Messiah Part 3Matt 2:13-23 13 ¶ After they had gone, an angel of ADONAI appeared to Yosef in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and escape to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you to leave. For Herod is going to look for the child in order to kill him.” 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother, and left during the night for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until Herod died. This happened in order to fulfill what ADONAI had said through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” {#Ho 11:1} 16 ¶ Meanwhile, when Herod realized that the Magi had tricked him, he was furious and gave orders to kill all the boys in and around Beit–Lechem who were two years old or less, calculating from the time the Magi had told him. 17 In this way were fulfilled the words spoken through the prophet Yirmeyahu, 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and lamenting loudly. It was Rachel sobbing for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no longer alive.” {Jer 31:15} 19 ¶ After Herod’s death, an angel of ADONAI appeared in a dream to Yosef in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to Eretz–Yisra’el, for those who wanted to kill the child are dead.” 21 So he got up, took the child and his mother, and went back to Eretz–Yisra’el. 22 However, when he heard that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as king of Y’hudah, he was afraid to go there. Warned in a dream, he withdrew to the Galil 23 and settled in a town called Natzeret, so that what had been spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he will be called a Natzrati. Luke 2:40 40 The child grew and became strong and filled with wisdom––God’s favor was upon him. Luke 2:41-51 41 ¶ Every year Yeshua’s parents went to Yerushalayim for the festival of Pesach. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up for the festival, as custom required. 43 But after the festival was over, when his parents returned, Yeshua remained in Yerushalayim. They didn’t realize this; 44 supposing that he was somewhere in the caravan, they spent a whole day on the road before they began searching for him among their relatives and friends. 45 Failing to find him, they returned to Yerushalayim to look for him. 46 On the third day they found him––he was sitting in the Temple court among the rabbis, not only listening to them but questioning what they said; 47 and everyone who heard him was astonished at his insight and his responses. 48 When his parents saw him, they were shocked; and his mother said to him, “Son! Why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been terribly worried looking for you!” 49 He said to them, “Why did you have to look for me? Didn’t you know that I had to be concerning myself with my Father’s affairs?” 50 But they didn’t understand what he meant. 51 So he went with them to Natzeret and was obedient to them. But his mother stored up all these things in her heart. Luke 2:52 52 And Yeshua grew both in wisdom and in stature, gaining favor both with other people and with God {as surely a true heir to King David would}.
MINISTRY OF YOCHANAN BEGINS Luke 3:1-3 1 ¶ In the fifteenth year of Emperor Tiberius’ rule; when Pontius Pilate was governor of Y’hudah, Herod ruler of the Galil, his brother Philip ruler of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, {Philip, was tetrarch of other parts of Yisrael which included Syria} 2 with ‘Anan and Kayafa being the cohanim g’dolim; {They received the honor through intrigue and not rightfully. This happened because all the sons of Tzadok, who were rightful Kohanim, had been exiled from Yerushalayim by Antipas, son of Herod. Some of the rightful Kohanim went to Damascus of Syria; others went into the Yehudah desert and the Qumran area of the Dead Sea. Antipas continued to hold considerable influence among the leaders of Yehudah, so he kept the place of his father's throne in Yehudah. Therefore, there was enmity between the exiled rightful Kohanim, who were sons of Tzadok, and the house of Herod and his collaborators, the unlawful chief Kohanim.} the word of God came to Yochanan Ben–Z’kharyah in the desert. {He was the son of Zacharyah, a rightful Kohen and son of Tzadok to which Gavri-El, the messenger of Elohim, had appeared. Though exiled, and unable to enter Yerushalayim, Yochanan was a true Kohen ordained by Elohim.} 3 He went all through the Yarden region proclaiming an immersion involving turning to God from sin in order to be forgiven.{For the mikveh is the right of the Kohen to officiate for cleansing according to the Torah of YHVH.} John 1:6-8
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was Yochanan.
7 He came to be a testimony, to bear witness concerning the light; so that through him, everyone might put his trust in God and be faithful to him.
8 He himself was not that light; no, he came to bear witness concerning the light. Mark 1:4-6 4 So it was that Yochanan the Immerser appeared in the desert, proclaiming an immersion involving turning to God from sin {t'shuvah} in order to be forgiven. 5 People went out to him from all over Y’hudah, as did all the inhabitants of Yerushalayim. Confessing their sins, they were immersed by him in the Yarden River. 6 Yochanan wore clothes of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; he ate locusts [locust berries] and wild honey. {In these days there were two sects of Judaism that controlled most of religious life in Yisrael. The Tzaddikim [Sadducees], meaning righteous ones, were mostly the chief Kohanim who officiated the sacrificial system; and the P'rushim [Pharisees] meaning withdrawing ones, who were commentators on Halakhah, the way of living according to Jewish ordinances. These were learned and pious Jews who interpreted the Torah to the people. The P'rushim were made up of two houses, that of Shimmei and that of Hillel. These opposed each other continually. In addition, the Torah was interpreted differently by the Yehudim [leaders in Judah] and the Jews of the Galil. Yochanan and Yeshua were not opposed by all the P'rushim.} Matt 3:7-12 7 ¶ But when Yochanan saw many of the P’rushim and Tz’dukim coming to be immersed by him, he said to them {he targeted certain corrupt ones of}, “You snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming punishment? 8 If you have really turned from your sins to God, produce fruit that will prove it! 9 And don’t suppose you can comfort yourselves by saying, ‘Avraham is our father’! For I tell you that God can raise up for Avraham sons from these stones! 10 Already the axe is at the root of the trees, ready to strike; every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown in the fire! 11 It’s true that I am immersing you in water so that you might turn from sin to God; but the one coming after me is more powerful than I – I’m not worthy even to carry his sandals – and he will immerse you in the Ruach HaKodesh and in fire. 12 He has with him his winnowing fork; and he will clear out his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn but burning up the straw with unquenchable fire!” Luke 3:10-15 10 The crowds asked Yochanan, “So then, what should we do?” 11 He answered, “Whoever has two coats should share with somebody who has none, and whoever has food should do the same.” 12 Tax–collectors also came to be immersed; and they asked him, “Rabbi, what should we do?” 13 “Collect no more than the government assesses, ”he told them. 14 Some soldiers asked him, “What about us? What should we do?” To them he said, “Don’t intimidate anyone, don’t accuse people falsely, and be satisfied with your pay.” {Do not extort money from your subjects.} 15 The people were in a state of great expectancy {were in expectation of the Mashiach}, and everyone was wondering whether perhaps Yochanan himself might be the Messiah; John 1:20-21 20 he was very straightforward and stated clearly, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 “Then who are you?” they asked him. “Are you Eliyahu?” “No, I am not,” he said. “Are you ‘the prophet,’ the one we’re expecting? ” {Because they thought that the prophet who Moshe wrote about (the prophet like him) was someone different than the Mashiach.} “No,” he replied. John 1:22- 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? — so that we can give an answer to the people who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?” Luke 4:4-6 4 {Yochanan answered}It was just as had been written in the book of the sayings of the prophet Yesha‘yahu, “The voice of someone crying out: ‘In the desert prepare the way for ADONAI! Make straight paths for him! 5 Every valley must be filled in, every mountain and hill leveled off; the winding roads must be straightened and the rough ways made smooth. 6 Then all humanity will see God’s deliverance.”’ {Yeshua [Salvation]} {#Isa 40:3–5} John 1:25-27 25 They asked him, “If you are neither the Messiah nor Eliyahu nor ‘the prophet,’ then why are you immersing people?” 26 To them Yochanan replied, “I am {have authority as a Kohen to officiate the mikvah} immersing people in water, but among you is standing someone whom you don’t know. 27 He is the one coming after me — I’m not good enough even to untie his sandal!” Luke 3:16-17 16 …He will immerse you in the Ruach HaKodesh and in fire. 17 He has with him his winnowing fork to clear out his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the straw with unquenchable fire!” 18 And with many other warnings besides these he announced the Good News to the people. 19 But Yochanan also denounced Herod the regional governor for taking as his own wife Herodias, the wife of his brother, and for all the other wicked things Herod had done; When Yeshua was about thirty years of age, Matt 3:13 13 ¶ Then Yeshua came from the Galil to the Yarden to be immersed by Yochanan. John 1:29-31 29 The next day, Yochanan saw Yeshua coming toward him and said, “Look! God’s lamb! The one who is taking away the sin of the world! 30 This is the man I was talking about when I said, ‘After me is coming someone who has come to rank above me, because he existed before me.’ 31 I myself did not know who he was, but the reason I came immersing with water was so that he might be made known to Isra’el.” Matt 3:13-17 14 But Yochanan tried to stop him. “You are coming to me? I ought to be immersed by you!” 15 However, Yeshua answered him, “Let it be this way now, because we should do everything righteousness requires.” Then Yochanan let him. 16 As soon as Yeshua had been immersed, he came up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, he saw the Spirit of God coming down upon him like a dove, 17 and a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; I am well pleased with him.” John 1:28- 28 All this took place in Beit-Anyah, east of the Yarden, where Yochanan was immersing. 32 Then Yochanan gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and remaining on him. 33 I myself did not know who he was, but the one who sent me to immerse in water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is the one who immerses in the Ruach HaKodesh.’ 34 And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.” John 1:35-39 35 The next day, Yochanan was again standing with two of his talmidim. 36 On seeing Yeshua walking by, he said, “Look! God’s lamb!” 37 His two talmidim heard him speaking, and they followed Yeshua. 38 Yeshua turned and saw them following him, and he asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi!” (which means “Teacher!”) “Where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and remained with him the rest of the day — it was about four o’clock in the afternoon. Matt 4:1-11 1 ¶ Then the Spirit led Yeshua up into the wilderness to be tempted by the Adversary. 2 After Yeshua had fasted forty days and nights, he was hungry. 3 The Tempter ha'Satan [the Adversary] came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, order these stones to become bread.” 4 But he answered, “The Tanakh says, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of ADONAI”’ {#De 8:3} 5 Then the Adversary took him to the holy city and set him on the highest point of the Temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “jump! For the Tanakh says, ‘He will order his angels to be responsible for you… They will support you with their hands, so that you will not hurt your feet on the stones.”’ {#Ps 91:11–12} 7 Yeshua replied to him, “But it also says, ‘Do not put ADONAI your God to the test.”’ {#De 6:16} 8 Once more, the Adversary took him up to the summit of a very high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in all their glory, 9 and said to him, “All this I will give you if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 “Away with you, Satan!” Yeshua told him, “For the Tanakh says, ‘Worship ADONAI your God, and serve only him.”’ {#De 6:13–14} 11 Then the Adversary let him alone, and angels came and took care of him. |
